Essential Question: How does the Flapper represent the "new woman"? Were the 1920's successful for the women's movement?
Flapper girls represented the "new woman" because they no longer cared about rules. They cut their hair short, smoke, and drank and were not going to be held down by the men. Also, the 1920's were successful for the women's movement because women finally began to gain rights like voting.

Flappers:
Flappers changed the view of women in the 1920's because they acted nothing like the traditional woman. They smoke, they drank, and they were promiscuous. While these actions irritated the older generation, they also empowered women to make their own choices and act how they wanted, not how other people expected them to.

Women's Movements:
In the 1920's women began gaining rights through the Women's Movement. For years, women had been treated very poorly and men were always the dominant species. Women could not vote, divorce, or own property. Their sole purpose was to take care of the children and the husband. In the 20's, women finally gained the right to vote through the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. Also, the Women's Bureau of the Department of Labor was created to collect information about women in the workforce to set laws protecting them from dangerous labor. All in all, the Women's Movement were campaigns to grant rights for women.

Comparison of life:
Life for women in the 20's was different than life for the women during the progressive era because the 20's women had much more power. In the 20's a main priority of many people were to improve the living conditions of women and to give them more rights, especially concerning their bodies and their well-being, while in the progressive era, men still decided everything for women. Also, women began joining together in campaigns to take control of their lives.

Thinking like a Historian "Through Their Eyes": If I were to put myself in the position of women in the 1920's I would be proud of myself for trying to make a difference, but I would also be irritated that it is so difficult to gain the smallest rights. I would also feel sympathetic towards the blacks and immigrants.
